Lyme-literate practitioners* know that there is no completely reliable test for Lyme disease at this time, and that additional lab tests are needed to determine if there are additional co-infections (that can be transmitted by a single tick bite). They use lab tests as one diagnostic tool to diagnosea patient along with assessing symptoms, and medical history. The result is a “clinical diagnosis”- a more complete assessment than phlebotomy alone.
*What is a “Lyme-Literate Practitioner?” (Many times, referred to as simply, a Lyme specialist, Lyme doctor or Lyme practitioner.) A licensed medical professional (MD, DO, DNP, NP, PA, etc.) who uses his/her experience with Lyme disease and other tick-borne and vector-borne infections to treat patients. Often they have received training through ILADS (International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society).
